About Valiyavila Madannada Temple, Mayyanad
The Valiyavila Madannada Temple, located in Mayyanad, Kollam, is one of Kerala’s most ancient and spiritually powerful temples. Dedicated to Madan Thampuran, the cosmic form of Lord Shiva (Maha Nadan), the temple stands as a sacred symbol of divine energy, tradition, and history spanning over a thousand years.
The main idol of Madan Thampuran is uniquely represented as a Theevetti (divine flame), radiating brilliance like the sun — a form that is believed to be the only one of its kind in the world. The temple also houses a rare white Shiva Lingam from Mount Kailasa, regarded as the only white Shiva Linga in Kerala, symbolizing purity and transcendence.
The temple’s Upadevatha is Bhadrakali, worshipped in her Kannaki form, embodying strength and justice. It is believed that this land originally belonged to Kannaki Bhadrakali, who graciously allowed Lord Shiva to reside here. The temple layout is unique, with Shiva facing east and Bhadrakali facing north, similar to the arrangement at Kodungallur, symbolizing the perfect balance of Shiva–Shakti energy.
As per ancient tradition, Mandakadu Devi (Kanyakumari) and Kodungallur Devi are considered the sisters of Lord Shiva (Madan Thampuran) of this temple. The Sanctum Sanctorum (Sreekovil), built entirely of rock and standing 41 feet high, is the tallest in Kerala — designed so that the deity can spiritually “see” his sisters’ abodes. This architectural marvel reflects the depth of ancient temple science and spiritual alignment.
The temple is historically known as the birthplace of the Pongala and Gajamela rituals. Between 1965 and 1980, the annual festival featured over 70 elephants in a single-day procession, setting an unbroken record in Kerala’s temple history. Madan Thampuran is revered as the Desa Devan (Guardian Deity) of an 8-kilometer radius, and his procession covers more than 5 kilometers from both sides — a rare and grand tradition
